Message I just did some calculations.

Cost of electricity: 36MJ/$
Cost of 87 gasoline: 65MJ/$

Assuming $2/Gallon for 87 gasoline and 10c/KWH for electricity.

Efficiency of gasoline engines: 25%
Efficiency of electric motors: 95%

So gasoline cars are about 2 times more expensive to run.

Additionally, electric motors have a flatter torque curve over a larger RPM range, batteries can be located to attain desired weight distribution, no need for an elaborate cooling system, ...
